Corporate Communication - Introductory Post

Yes! I have big dreams too. They are not any different from people of my age group. We all want to make it big, be successful and have a happy life and if it’s not asking for too much, even a rich life. Flowery dreams and we seem to go hand in hand! I am a student pursuing my Masters in Public Relations and this is my blog on corporate communication.

When I encounter a situation or a problem, which is rather complex in nature, I try finding a solution by thinking – what if this happened at home/with friends? What would I do? This almost always helps me come up with the best solutions. In fact relating problems with real life situations is the best way to come up with answers. Even when studying, I try to relate what I study with daily life situations and the problems we face (easiest way to remember concepts).

In the recent past I have been reading a lot about corporate communication for my thesis. The more I read, the more I am gripped. The world of corporate communication is pretty vast and there is so much to explore. Van Riel defines corporate communication as, "An instrument of management by means of which all consciously used forms of internal and external communication are harmonised as effectively and efficiently as possible with the objective to create a favourable basis for relationships with groups upon which the company is dependent". Corporate communication mainly deals with overseeing and handling communication in the three main disciplines of internal communication, external communication and media relations.

In short, corporate communication is everything an organization does to maintain a healthy relationship with their employees, stakeholder and the media. Basically it’s just like all those efforts we take in order to maintain cordial and healthy relations with friends and family, but just on an organizational front.

A few books that have been constant guests on my study table for the last couple of months are ‘Corporate Communication- A guide to theory and practice’ by Joep Cornelissen, ‘Corporate Communication and Public Relations’ by Lin Grensing-Pophal and ‘Excellence in Business Communication’ by John V. Thill and Courtland L. Boveé. These books have introduced and explained the subject and its various facets in detail in a simple fashion, making it easy to understand for even those, who are absolutely ignorant about, the world of corporate communication. They have been there for so long that I don’t feel like returning them back to the library. I’m sure the books feel at home on my table by now. :P

In the posts that will follow, I will be discussing in detail the various components of corporate communication and trying to relate them to real life daily situations, in a fun way ofcourse. This is my attempt to make the concepts very easy to comprehend and remember. Well that is the plan for now. :P
